Who am I now?
It is a question many mums ask in a quiet moment. You love your children deeply. And still, somewhere between the feedings and the school runs, the woman you were before, with her name, her dreams, her laughter, can feel like a stranger.
This is not ungratefulness. It is a sign you are growing into a new chapter of becoming.
Why you feel lost
Motherhood asks you to pour out constantly. When everyone needs something from you, day after day, the parts of you that are not "mum" can go quiet. Your hobbies, your ambitions, the music you used to love, the friends you used to see, they wait. And slowly, you forget they were there.
There is also a cultural layer. In many Nigerian homes, a woman is praised for self-sacrifice. Reclaiming yourself can feel almost forbidden, as if wanting more means loving your family less. It does not.
How to find yourself again
- Reclaim small pieces of your identity. Not a whole new life. One thing. A book. A walk. A playlist. Five minutes that are only yours.
- Reconnect with your dreams. What did you want before baby? Some of it still fits. Some has changed. Both are okay. Ask: what do I want now?
- Be with people who see the woman, not just the mum. The right community reminds you that you are more than a parent.
- Protect your own growth. A course, a business, a prayer life, a craft. Growth is not selfish. It is how you stay full enough to give.
- Say no without apology. Every "no" to something draining is a "yes" to yourself.
The guilt will visit. Let it pass.
When you take time for yourself, guilt will come. Notice it, then answer it: my children need a whole, alive mother, not a depleted one. Rest is not a reward you earn. It is a need you honour.
Practical ways to come back to yourself
- A daily anchor: Five minutes in the morning that are only yours, before the house wakes.
- A weekly date with yourself: A walk, a coffee, a class. Treat it like a real appointment.
- Reconnect with a dream: Write down one thing you have always wanted to do. Take one small step toward it this month.
- Find your reflection in others: Spend time with mums who are also becoming. Iron sharpens iron.
You do not have to choose
The lie is that you must choose between being a good mother and being yourself. The truth is your children need to see a woman who is alive, not just surviving. A mum who dreams models for her children that life does not end when you become a parent. It deepens.
The woman behind the mum
She is still there. A little changed, a little tired, but wiser and stronger than before. She is not lost. She is just waiting for you to remember her.
Today, do one thing that is only for you. Not for the baby. Not for the house. For her. She deserves to come back to life.
And if you want a community that sees the whole woman, not just the mother, join MomCircleNG. You belong here, all of you.
