Toddlerhood is full of big emotions in small bodies. Tantrums, "no!", and testing limits are signs of healthy development — your child is learning they are a separate person. Gentle discipline is about teaching, not punishing. ## Connection before correction Before you correct behaviour, connect. Get down to eye level, touch gently, and name the feeling: "You're upset because the toy stopped." Feeling understood helps a small child begin to calm down. ## Set the limit, not the spirit You can hold a firm boundary and still be warm. "I won't let you hit. Hitting hurts. You can be angry, and you can stomp your feet." The limit is firm; your love is constant. ## Tantrums are not manipulation A toddler mid-tantrum is overwhelmed, not scheming. They need calm, not a lecture. Stay near, keep them safe, and ride it out. When the storm passes, offer a hug and a fresh start — no grudge, no long lecture. ## Prevention over punishment Most meltdowns come from hunger, tiredness, or overstimulation. Keep a simple routine, protect naps, offer snacks, and give limited choices ("this shirt or that one?") to respect their growing need for control. ## Model what you want to see Children copy what we do, not what we say. If you want gentle words, use them. If you want apology, offer one. Repair matters more than perfection. > You are your child's safe place. Boundaries feel loving when they come with connection.
