Keeping Cool, Calm, and Collected

The heat has been intense lately, and as mums, we know that keeping our little ones comfortable, hydrated, and active can take a little extra planning. Between school runs, work, and household responsibilities, it is easy to get caught up in the routine—but during this hot season, our focus needs to shift slightly to keep our children safe.

At MomCircleNG, we believe that supporting mothers means sharing practical information that makes everyday life a little easier. It also means creating opportunities for us to connect, like our recent Sunday Mama Hangout, which reminded us that motherhood is much lighter when we share the load.

Motherhood was never meant to be done alone; our village is the strength that carries us through the toughest seasons.

Practical Tips for the Hot Season

  • Prioritize Hydration: Offer water regularly throughout the day. Don’t wait for them to ask. For breastfed babies, breast milk is perfect, but they may want to feed more often.
  • Dress for the Weather: Stick to lightweight, breathable cotton fabrics. Avoid over-layering, even for babies, and check their backs or chests rather than their hands to gauge their true temperature.
  • Fresh and Balanced: Incorporate hydrating fruits like watermelon, pawpaw, and oranges into their diet to help with fluid intake and nutrition.
  • Smart Activity Scheduling: You don't have to stay indoors all day! Move outdoor play to the cooler hours of early morning or late evening. Indoors, try dance sessions, soft-ball games, or creative storytelling.
  • Create Cool Spaces: Keep blinds drawn during the hottest parts of the day and ensure good ventilation. And remember: never, ever leave a child unattended in a parked car.

Know the Warning Signs

Our little ones can’t always tell us how they feel. Watch for signs like unusual tiredness, irritability, dizziness, or a decrease in wet nappies. If your child seems severely overheated or confused, please seek urgent medical care immediately—trust your instincts, mama.

Don't Forget Yourself

While we are busy checking if the kids have had enough water, we often forget to check in with ourselves. Are you hydrated? Have you eaten? Have you had a moment to sit down? Your wellbeing is just as important as theirs. When the heat feels overwhelming, reach out to your village, share the tasks, and allow yourself to rest.

Building Our Village

Our Sunday Mama Hangout was a beautiful reminder that when we come together, we aren't just names on a screen—we are women supporting women. Whether it’s a shared laugh or a bit of advice, that connection is vital. Your village doesn't have to be massive; it just has to be there. We invite you to continue building that village with us at MomCircleNG.app. You belong here.
